Rick’s Dessert Diner 2232 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95816    (916) 444-0969

Typically served in Southern kitchens during the holidays, a Buttermilk Pie is always at the top of my list. Yes, it sounds a little odd but just imagine the most rich and luscious custard and add a flaky, buttery crust… You’ve got yourself a Buttermilk Pie. The delicious crust is filled with a buttermilk egg custard and topped with some nutmeg and lemon zest. Dee. Lish. Us. Rick’s Dessert Diner has been Voted Best of Sacramento for Dessert every year since 1986 and features over 285 desserts on their menu!

I love Rick’s because it features items that I have never heard of before. Like the California Walnut Pie. I was told if you enjoy Pecan Pie (which I do!) to try the locally grown Walnut Pie. And last…but certainly not least the Apple Pear Praline Pie. Um. Yes, please. Fresh apples, pears and pralines (tossed in spices and brandy) placed in a homemade butter crust and topped with honey brown sugar crumb crust…It’s doesn’t get any better than that! For those chocolate lovers (Valentine’s Day right around the corner!!) you have to try Rick’s combination of lots of coconut, pecans, and bittersweet chocolate chunks baked in their homemade buttery crust……just say; “One German’s Chocolate Pie to go please!”

Move over cupcakes. Mini Pies are making their way on the bakery scene! Who wouldn’t want their own mini pie? These bite (okay, maybe more than one bite… maybe like 4 or 5) sized delicacies are absolutely delicious and TreyBCakes are perfecting the idea. Trey B Cakes offers 3 flavors of mini pies… The apple (the classic, traditional and scrumptious filling with a buttery and flaky crust) the Fruit Tart (golden flaky white chocolate crust filled with fresh organic strawberries, kiwis, raspberries and blackberries drizzled with a sweet glaze) and my favorite. A twist on the classic Banana Cream Pie. This is owner Trey’s grandfather’s recipe. Popie’s Banana Cream Pie! A flaky crust with dark chocolate inside and topped with bananas, whipped cream and chocolate shavings. OMG. The only bad thing about these mini pies is that you want to eat 10. By yourself. And not share with anyone. But don’t take my word for it. Stop in at Trey B Cakes today!

Freeport Bakery   2966 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95818      (916) 442-4256

If you have lived in Sacramento or anywhere even close to the vicinity then you know that Freeport Bakery is a Sacramento institution.  Known around the neighborhood as the place to go for cakes, pastries and sweets, let us not forget their pies and tarts!   Imagine sinking your teeth into a silky vanilla custard with a buttery crust,  loaded with a generous array of beautifully arranged fresh seasonal fruit on top. Elegant, eye-catching and delicious. One of Freeport’s most popular items. Let’s not stop there though.  With Valentine’s Day upon us quickly, may I suggest one of their Valentine specials off their holiday menu:  Fresh Strawberry Heart Tart –  their buttery puff pastry in a heart shape brushed on the bottom with chocolate and filled with their smooth Bavarian cream. Fresh strawberries on top. Yep…right to the heart of sweetness!  When you stop in don’t forget to congratulate the staff…it’s Freeport Bakery’s 25th Anniversary!

Ettore’s European Bakery   2376 Fair Oaks Blvd.. Sacramento, CA 95825   (916) 482-0708

Since 1985 Ravazzolo Ettore’s bakery has grown into another Sacramento bakery with highest regards.  Ettore got his start in Zurich Switzerland at a very young age.  Bringing his passion and expertise to Sacramento in 1977; Ettore and his family have grown his small croissant shop on Fair Oaks Blvd. to a staple name when it comes to wonderful desserts.  One can only imagine what sensors are set off when you step inside this bakery!  Well let me begin by saying my sweet palate was pleased in more ways than one.  The selection here is incredible not to mention mind boggling of which dessert to choose.  Keeping with our pie and tart trend, I ventured my taste buds into one of their Salted Caramel Tarts.  Yep…here goes my salivary glands soaking in the richness of the dark chocolate paired so well with the sea salt and creamy caramel blend.  Keeper for sure!  On to round two…..a slice of their Poached Pear Tart.  Beautiful and delicious. Butter almond cake with pears poached in red and white wine.  Yes, you can have your pears and wine too!!  Desert coma here I come!  Let me end with knowing I really, really wanted a slice of their Linzer Torte -an Austrian favorite made with buttery almond dough and filled with raspberry preserves but I just had to stop before it was too late.  Next time for sure!!  Be sure to stop in and check out their Valentine’s Menu and pre-order your treats (they do online ordering….score!).
